The journey of a hiker is often filled with unexpected twists and turns, and these three days were a testament to that. From phone troubles to generous strangers, it's a story of adventure and the kindness of people along the way.
A Restful Stopover
After a well-deserved night at the Catamount Inn, our hiker, Shooter, and I found ourselves in Bennington, VT, ready to tackle the day. A quick stop at the Verizon store was in order, and what a stroke of luck it was to meet Peter, the motel owner, who offered us a ride! A simple act of kindness, but it set the tone for the days to come.
Trekking Poles and Tech Troubles
As we embarked on our journey, a bent trekking pole and a shattered phone screen added a layer of challenge. These are the little hiccups that make hiking an adventure, don't you think? But with a new phone in hand, albeit with an expensive bill, we were ready to continue our path.
Reuniting with Trail Friends
Zipper, Freight Train, and their crew picked us up, and it was a reunion of sorts. The bent trekking pole, a faithful companion for years, was a reminder of the miles traveled. We caught up, shared stories, and even managed to outfit some trail friends with crocs, a fun little addition to our journey.
Hospitality and Home-Cooked Meals
Zipper's parents, Jim and Cathy, opened their home to us, and their hospitality was overwhelming. A chance to rest, do laundry, and enjoy a freshly made pasta dinner - it's these moments that make hiking an experience beyond the trail. The dynamic duo of bacon and coffee in the morning, followed by cold beverages and camaraderie, is a hiker's dream come true.
Floating and Fireworks
Day 110 was all about beating the heat. A boat ride, a swim in the bay, and cold drinks - the perfect recipe for a hot summer day. And what's a 4th of July without fireworks? We watched the sky light up, a fitting end to a relaxing day.
Sailing and Sea Legs
Day 111 brought a new experience - sailing! I must admit, I was a bit apprehensive about sea sickness, but it turned out to be a memorable adventure. Sailing around a lighthouse, feeling the wind, and even dozing off for a bit - it was a peaceful and unique experience. And of course, we fueled up with bar pizzas, a local specialty it seems!
Kindness and Gratitude
These three days were a reminder of the kindness that exists in the world. Zipper's family, complete strangers at first, welcomed us with open arms. Their generosity knew no bounds, and it left a lasting impression. It's these moments that make hiking not just about the trail, but about the people you meet along the way.
In my opinion, these little detours and acts of kindness are what make hiking an extraordinary journey. It's not just about the miles walked, but the experiences and connections made. So, here's to the unexpected adventures and the kind souls we meet on our paths!
